Our Year 5 class is called ‘Starlings’. We chose this name because we have a murmuration of starlings that love to swoop over the school grounds. In Year 5, we will continue to grow in independence and fly high!
Meet the Team
Class Teacher - Miss Regan
Hello, I’m Miss Regan and I am the Class Teacher in Team Starlings. In Team Starlings, we will learn lots of exciting new things and grow in confidence together. I can’t wait to teach you all about explosive volcanoes, the wonders of space and our solar system, and the Ancient Greeks! We have a lot of fantastic texts to read together this year, including some written by William Shakespeare, who is one of my favourites. Outside of school, I love to swim and explore the great outdoors. I can’t wait to hear all about your favourite things and have a fantastic year together.
Teaching Assistant - Mrs Gill
Hello! I’m Mrs Gill and I am really looking forward to meeting you all! I am a Teaching Assistant in our Team Starlings where we all have lots of fun and work hard. I love reading and really enjoy being outside and riding my bike. My favourite books include The Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe and HedgeHog. I have two children and a pet dog called Flo.
Our Approach to Learning
Year 5 will be a key year for our children, as they will build on their secure foundation from previous years and begin to tackle new challenges. In Team Starlings, we will continue to embed our core knowledge whilst developing independence and aspiring to excel in our learning.
In Key Stage 2, the curriculum consists of three core subjects and a variety of foundation subjects. Throughout Year 5, we will develop our knowledge, skills and understanding in each of these subject areas, adding to the building blocks of learning already in place.
Core subjects: Maths, English Science
Foundation Subjects: History, Geography, Art and Design, Design and Technology, Modern Foreign Languages, Computing, Music, PSHE, RE and PE.
As the children move into Upper Key Stage 2, they will be taught many new skills which will build on their fantastic prior learning. Therefore, it will be essential that children are confident and secure with their basic key skills, such as maths fluency, multiplication tables and phonics knowledge to assist with spellings. By practising these at home, children can grow in confidence and accuracy, which will allow them to apply their new learning with greater ease. Some fun ways to help embed these skills include singing multiplication tables songs, having a multiplication tables competition, or even an at home ‘Spelling-bee!’
Knowing how to be a successful learner will be key to tackling the challenges we will face in Upper KS2. Developing our Streethay character traits throughout the year will be key to our success: resilience, curiosity, optimism, craftsmanship, empathy and eloquence.
Our classroom environment will continue to reflect the calm and nurturing experience the children have had so far at Streethay, keeping the classroom minimal, homely and an inspiring place for children to learn and grow.
In Team Starlings, we endeavour to develop good relationships between school and home, through shared dialogue and regular communication. We want you to feel involved in your child’s education and be part of our successful team. Go Team Starlings!
If you are a parent and have any questions or queries relating to your child’s learning, you are always most welcome to speak to Miss Regan in person, through an arranged appointment via the office, or via email on info@streethay.set.org.
We look forward to a fantastic year!
We believe in a close collaboration between home and school. On this page you will find learning updates, home learning activities and curriculum support documents. We like to celebrate learning completed at home. If you complete work at home of any kind or your child reaches a milestone e.g. learning to ride a bike or special achievements, please share this with school.
