At Streethay Primary School, Personal, Social, Health and Economic (PSHE) education plays a vital role in supporting pupils’ personal development, wellbeing and understanding of the world around them. We use the Jigsaw PSHE programme as our whole-school PSHE scheme, ensuring a progressive, engaging and age-appropriate curriculum from Reception through to Year 6.
Jigsaw PSHE brings together Personal, Social, Health and Economic education, emotional literacy, social skills and spiritual development in a structured and carefully sequenced programme. Through regular lessons, children develop the knowledge, understanding and skills they need to become confident, respectful and responsible members of society. We also adapt and personalise learning to respond to the needs of our pupils, current issues and links with the wider curriculum, ensuring PSHE remains relevant, meaningful and purposeful.
The curriculum is organised into six half-termly themes, known as “Jigsaw Pieces”:
- Being Me in My World
- Celebrating Difference
- Dreams and Goals
- Healthy Me
- Relationships
- Changing Me
These themes are revisited each year at an age-appropriate level, allowing pupils to build on prior learning and deepen their understanding over time.
Through Jigsaw PSHE, pupils are encouraged to:
- Develop positive relationships and respect for others
- Understand and manage their emotions
- Build resilience, confidence and self-esteem
- Learn about physical and mental health and wellbeing
- Understand how to stay safe, both online and offline
- Appreciate diversity and celebrate differences
- Become responsible and active citizens
Lessons are interactive and inclusive, providing opportunities for discussion, reflection and collaborative learning. Mindfulness approaches are also embedded throughout the programme to support children’s emotional awareness and self-regulation.
Our PSHE curriculum supports pupils in becoming healthy, independent and thoughtful individuals who are well prepared for life in modern Britain and for their future learning and experiences.
